Advices And Informations

Safety

To enter Vietnam, you need a valid passport that is still valid for at least 6 months from your departure date from Vietnam. In addition to a passport, you also need a visa to enter Vietnam. Since early 2018, it has become much easier for Dutch citizens to obtain a Vietnam visa through the E-visa system. With an E-visa, you can apply online and print your visa at home. The cost of a Vietnam E-visa is 25 USD, and you can apply through the official website of the Vietnamese Immigration Department by uploading a passport scan and a passport photo.

It is recommended to schedule a travel health consultation with GGD or your doctor before traveling to Vietnam for vaccination and health advice.

Local Laws

Vietnam has three climate zones:

  • Southern Vietnam has a tropical climate, with an average temperature of 32°C. The rainy season lasts from June to September, with heavy afternoon showers.
  • Central Vietnam experiences the rainy season from September to late November. Vietnam is hit by typhoons about 8 times a year, usually between June and October, lasting 2-4 days.
  • Northern Vietnam has four seasons, with cold winters that can even bring snow in mountainous areas. Summers are warm with heavy rainfall. The best time to visit is during autumn and spring.

The local currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Banknotes range from 200 dong to 500,000 dong, with the most commonly used being 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 dong. Be cautious, as the 10,000 and 20,000 dong notes are both blue, making them easy to mix up. Exchanging Euros to Dong is simple in Vietnam. ATMs are available in all major cities, but make sure your bank card is enabled for foreign withdrawals. The exchange rate for the Dong can be checked at: http://www.xe.com/currency/vnd-vietnamese-dong.

Vietnam uses 220V electrical voltage, and power outlets are compatible with Dutch plugs. It is recommended to bring a power strip, as many hotels have limited available sockets.
